Degree must for MPs and MLAs

I saw a photo on another Nittian blog with this caption(paraphrasing): "US senators from Yale, Indian MPs from Jail".
In my honest assessment, all the bills and rules and decisions in the government are not made by the MPs or ministers but by the Secretaries: the Indian Administrative Service or Civil Service members. Election manifestoes are in the hand of politicians; the actual bills are undoubtedly done by the mentioned persons.
I say this because in the past few months in the US Senators have been working 24x7 on the economic crisis - hammering out details - arguing, bickering, inserting, removing clauses, but most importantly: they do it themselves. Almost every single Senator or Representative is a Law graduate with some experience in actual courts - so Judicial jargon is no big deal for them.

Bribery and incompetence and apathy are the biggest evils in our society, but, the only immediate, enforceable, first, basic solution I think is to bring a rule so that only college graduates can stand to be MPs/MLAs.

Atleast then lawmakers should spend more time making better laws for the nation rather than discussing politics most of the time, hopefully, with the college atmosphere bringing some change to their way of thought.

Again, does my proposal stand up straight against the recent violence in the Madras Law college? Eh...... Nation should be put ahead of self, people.

The degree alone will not be enough, I think, but it is definitely a first step. What we need is an educated country- a tall order, and one that will take years in its fulfillment. If we have an educated, informed public which is able to access information (like fivethirtyeight.com or even Youtube, where tall claims made by politicians are routinely debunked), our votes might actually make a difference. Also, this will eventually lead to the emergence of better, more genuine leaders; if only because only such leaders will stand up to intense public scrutiny. Right now, the problem, in my opinion, is that the majority of the votes come from rural India, where people have more pressing problems to worry about- like their next meal- than terrorism. And unfortunately, these very people are the ones who suffer the most because of the ineptitude and apathy of the leaders they themselves elect. It's a vicious circle, and one that can only be broken by a long term solution like the spread of education.

Agreed. I didn't write it, but I also imply that if we have such highly educated lawmakers the general public will not be that far off..

Yes, rural voters are the crux of the issue. I just read somewhere that rural India votes more reliably that urban India.

I dont agree with you.... MPs or MLAs with degrees will never pave a new path for a rising India... Our whole system is flawed... 2 many parties, castes, sub castes,religion... will never help dese guys... as dey are answerable to everyone... even a PMK with a single seat is daring enuf to withdraw support frm a union government...it shows ur attitude... All r union ministers and Prime Minister is highly educated than anyone else... no nation is close to us in case of learned politicians....First decrease the number of votes... make sure only degree holders vote...so that vote bank politics is avoided... make all major cities into union territories.... so we can give much more attention to them.... Bring a law "Hang me if I dont deliver"... Have a healthy opposition which fights for the country's interest first than the party's interest... If the "Role of Opposition" is healthy and justified... we surely are looking for a newer and brighter India..... no matter wat degree our politicians have...

1. How difficult will it be to get a fake degree?
2. I agree though that education is needed. I support universal education for all.
3. I also think the media has to grow up and start asking more questions rather than fear the parties.
